Common Names: Rock rose, cistus, labdanum

Botanical Name: Cistus ladanifer L.

Family: Cistaceae

Plant Part Used: Leaves, twigs and flowers

Extraction Method: Solvent extraction.  The resin or gum has been used for many hundreds of years throughout Egypt, Arabia and Europe as incense, perfume and medicinally.

Perfumery Note: Top to middle

Aromatic Intensity: Medium to strong

Aromatic Description: Sweet, musky, balsamic, woody almost vanilla like aroma.

Colour/Characteristics: Light yellowy-orange to light brown or amber coloured viscous oil

Main Chemical Constituents: α-pinene, pinadiene, camphene, terrpinene-4-ol, borneol, ledol, viridiflorol, bornyl acetate

Blends Well With: Frankicense, lavender, myrrh, patchouli, cedarwood, sandalwood, rose, clary sage, oakmoss, helichrysum

Properties/Uses: Antimicrobial, antiseptic, astringent, emmenagogue, expectorant, sedative, vulnerary, immune modulator/ regulator, anti-infectious.  May be used to help treat viral infections, bronchial conditions, flu, joint aches and pains, muscular pain, arthritis, cuts, wounds, acne, oily skin, mature or wrinkled skin, scarring, eczema, psoriasis, in massage for lymphatic drainage.

Energetics: The deep warm, soothing aroma of labdanum is recommended for use after a traumatic event to help comfort, especially when left feeling cold, empty or numb. It can help to relieve nervousness, tension, stress and anxiety by encouraging a sense of deep calm and tranquillity and by soothing our physical, mental, spiritual and emotional bodies.
