Botanical Name: Cupressus sempervirens L.

Family: Cupressaceae

Plant Part Used: Needles and Twigs

Extraction Method: Steam Distilled

Perfumery Note: Middle

Aromatic Intensity: Medium

Aromatic Description: Spicy, pine needles, slightly woody, evergreen, refreshing

Colour/Characteristics: Colourless to pale yellow liquid

Main Chemical Constituents: α-pinene, camphene, sabinene, ß-pinene, delta-3-carene

Blends Well With: bergamot, lavender, clary sage, pine oils, juniper, sandalwood, marjoram and rosemary, all citrus oils.

Properties/Uses: Antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, deodorant, diuretic, haemostatic, hepatic, styptic, sudorific, venous, decongestant, tonic.  Cypress (French) essential oil may be used to treat varicose veins, oedema, haemorrhoids, menstrual regulator, dysmenorrhoea, menorrhagia, menopausal problems, hot flashes, coughs, bronchitis, flu, throat infections, sore throat, laryngitis, decongesting, whooping cough, oily skin, sweaty skin, broken capillaries, bruises, cellulite, supports would healing.

Energetics: Cypress is excellent to use on an emotional level in times of major upheavals and changes in our life. While we navigate through life's major transitions and changes, cypress can help us to change, heal and transform as we find the courage to trust and surrender to our higher purpose and wisdom.  It may help to restore calm and soothe anger as well as to relieve anxiety and excessive thinking.  Cypress may be especially helpful during times of bereavement or the ending of close relationships. 

Use: Bath, diffuse, direct inhalation, personal inhaler, oil burner, oil vaporiser, salve, ointment, cream, skin care.

Safety: Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing.  Tisserand & Young advise that old or oxidised cypress oil should be avoided as skin sensitisation could occur if oxidised oil is used.  No contraindications known.  

Conservation Status: Listed as Least Concern on the IUCN red list.
