Botanical Name: Melissa officinalis

Lemon Balm is an aromatic perennial member of the mint family. It is fast growing and resembles peppermint in appearance.

Lemon Balm is considered antiviral, antibacterial, a digestive stimulant, an antidepressant, antihistamine & nerve tonic.

It is often used for relieving anxiety, tension, stress, insomnia, indigestion, stress related disorders such as IBS or respiratory irritation or nervous indigestion.

The leaves can be used in an infusion to induce perspiration to help cool a temperature associated with colds & the flu.

Lemon balm is also used for nervous headaches and for digestive problems such as nausea, bloating and colic. 

The juice from the leaves or a strong infusion can be dabbed on cold sores and in studies has been proven to reduce healing time and lessen re-occurrence. Bruised fresh leaves can be applied to insect bites, cuts and grazes. The leaves are used as a nervine for depression, anxiety, and insomnia. The tender shoots can be eaten in moderation and offer a lemony addition to salads, soups, sauces, and vinegar's. The pesto of lemon balm is quite delectable. Lemon balm is safe and enjoyable for children. It is one of the first herbs many mothers turn to for helping their children unwind and sleep.
